It's officially the holidays whanau, from today Monday 30th of March until Wednesday 15th of April. For those of you who enjoyed the first Home learning choice board, here is the second one.
Room 22 is a class of Year 4 ākonga (students) who strive to demonstrate our school values every day. Our rangitaki (blog) is just one way in which we can celebrate and share our learning journey with others. Please offer feedback in the form of comments, as this is what helps us all as learners to improve.

Learning at home.
Each week, I will post learning at home activity sheets. There will also be hard copies of these sheets available at school tomorrow (24th March), in the Puriri Home learning box. At the bottom of this post, is a slide presentation about websites to visit.
It would be great if some of the learning could be shared with me and I will post it on our blog.
If you have any questions about the learning choice boards or would like to share your learning, please email me- kmills@owairaka.school.nz
The slide contains some learning websites that our class has been visiting.
To my students, remember our challenge. It's time now for you to be the kindest member of your household. I look forward to seeing you all soon!

New Zealand vs India- Room 22 One day Cricket
On Wednesday we had a first session with Elliot (cricket coach). We were divided into two teams and had to choose a cricketing country to represent, we picked New Zealand and India. Then we had a game of Tornado cricket. Each team had four bats (representing our lives), every player had to hit and run. It was very similar to the game of non-stop cricket.
Team New Zealand won by 2 runs, India was very close and remained in good spirits after their loss.

Activity 1: Outdoor games.
What do you notice about all of these games? What material are they made out of?
All of the objects used in these outdoor games were made out of; wood, metal and rope. Plastic hadn't been invented yet. People were very poor so they had to be very creative and resourceful.
Do any of these games seem familiar to you?
Activity 2: Communication
There were no mobile phones back then, so how did people communicate?
Morse code, Semaphore and Braille communication techniques.
Activity 3: School
Wow, things were really different then. Students typically left school at the age of 12 to get a job.
If you misbehaved, then you would receive 'six of the best'.
Thank you to all of the people that made this trip possible and to the whanau that came along with us.

Life saving water skills!
This week, we have been wearing life jackets and learning how to be safe in the water until we are rescued. Do you know why we huddle together?
1. Safety in numbers- easier for big group of yellow reflective life jackets to be seen from a helicopter than single ones.
2. Support emotionally- we can talk to each other and keep each other calm.
3. Warmth and protection. We learnt that the most vulnerable (elderly, very young and injured) people should be in the centre of our huddle to keep them warm.
