Beach Education day- Our trip to Muriwai beach

On Monday the 30th of November our class along with Room 23 and some of Room 20 visited Muriwai beach. The purpose for our trip, was to engage in and learn about how to be safe on the beach. We had 3 wonderful life guards educate us about; safety rules, rip currents and how to be sunsmart during a visit to a beach.

I would like to acknowledge and say a very big THANK YOU to all of the whanau who came on the day, without them we could not have gone on this trip.

Consequence flow chart

On Monday for ICT James, came in and got us to a brainstorm of all of the possible choices we could make in relation to using our chromebooks. My group scenario was; While I was google searching I clicked on a link that has taken me to an inappropriate site.  Our group had to think about what we could do and what might happen if we made that choice.  The second slide is our Consequences flow chart. the colors mean: green = A good & sensible choice orange = not a  good decision but not that bad RED = BIG BAD CHOICE!!! Kauri Tag competition at lunch times.

During lunch times, the Kauri classes have been participating in a class tag competition. Room 19's team is led by our captain Kenz. Our team has been very successful and I am most proud of the fact that the team has demonstrated excellent sportsmanship.

Food For Thought

In weeks 1 and 2 we engaged in learning about nutrition. We had a specialist (Adele) visit us in class to help us understand the Food pyramid and what a serving size was, then we meet Adele at Pak'n'Save Mt Albert to do an activity. The activity required us to look at and analyse the nutritional content of foods we should eat everyday and food that we should eat occasionally.

Te Aroha song- sung by Room 19 students with a sprinkling of Room 23.

During our visit to Te Noho Kotahitanga Marae we learnt how to sing and sign the song Te Aroha. The message in this song is that everybody should have; Aroha-love, Whakapono-faith and Rangimarie-peace in their life. We would like to acknowledge the beautiful Whaea Linda for teaching us this beautiful song in two of our official languages.

Magnificent Marimba!!!

On Saturday (5th September) I was very privileged to go and watch the AMAZING Marimba festival held at the ASB stadium. When I first walked into the stadium, I was greeted by the musical magic of the Owairaka family marimba group. They played beautifully together and they looked like they were enjoying the moment. Then in the stadium, all of the schools present created a symphony of wonderful music for the audience. Now I don't believe in playing favourites, but the Owairaka marimba group were the GREATEST!!!
All warmed up and ready to dazzle our audience!!!

This term we are learning about statistics, with the goal of eventually becoming DATA DETECTIVES. As with all of our learning, we start of with a brainstorm about what we already know. This helps us as learners to identify what we need to learn.

Awesome first day in Room 19!!!

I had a fantastic first day in Room 19!!! The students in this class are energetic and enthusiastic learners. It was really nice to meet some of their whanau also. Thank you to all of the students, staff and whanau for making me feel so welcome. I am very happy to be part of such a great school and community and I look forward to getting to know more whanau members in the future.

Meeting Miss Mills

Today Room 19 had their first day with their new teacher, Miss Mills. It was great to learn about Miss Mills and her about her background.

We completed a task about who we are and shared things like the greetings we know in other languages, our successes and even how we think we learn best. 




Miss Mills shared her Pepeha with us and we found out that she really likes cats (and dogs) and that she really enjoys sport. Meeting a new teacher for the first time can be really scary as you don't know their systems, but Miss Mills explained that she is going to help us get to know each other and how we learn.



It's going to be a great rest of the year!

Basket Balls Skills

The Lost Pet - Show not Tell.



The lost pet

As a patch of light peeks through my bedroom window and finds a way up my bed to my eyes the patch of light wakes me up, I rub my eyes. A sudden thought of my brand new pet popped into my brain. I quickly  get dressed  and dash rapidly down the stairs the thought of my new pet still filling my mind.


I sprint through the living room out the back door as I jump onto the backyard’s bright green grass. The sun still shining as bright as it can.My eye’s are then taken to the pole and the rope where my massive, dazzling creature stood yesterday afternoon But my pet was no longer tied to the pole. He was nowhere to be seen. Thoughts of confusion infected my head. Where could he be? I repeat to myself. Sadness starts to take over the thought of confusion.


I circle the house over and over again looking under every leaf or branch finally admitting that he’s not around our house.
I then decide to grab my crayons and some sheets of paper to make posters that said LOST PET in capital letters.
I jogged around the neighborhood sellotaping the posters to trees. The sellotape barely sticking to rough bark. Going up to everybodys house in the neighborhood and asking have you seen my wonderful pet giraffe. I even wander up to people at the park and asking them. Everybody's answer was, “Sorry but no.”


So walked over to the playground tears filling my eyes. I walk to the swing with sorrow in my heart. A strong head strokes against my body. My pet giraffe had found me. Warmth had been restored to my body. I played with him for the rest of day at wide, spacious park.

Response to Reading Article.

Last week Cassius and Roriki had their first attempt at script writing. They asked classmates to play characters in their play. Classmates really enjoyed the play. Their main job however was to give Cassius and Roriki some feedback on their presentation and advice on next steps for script writing and presenting.

Yogurt Tasting by Nahlah


Making Yogurt.

Can you guess what is under this cloth?  Greek Yogurt. This week our class was learning about Milk. One group of readers decided to learn about The History of Yogurt as their topic. It started off in the Crock pot but this morning  we tipped it from that into some cheese cloth.


To sweeten the yogurt we were going to add honey.
,
We put it into cheese cloth and a make shift strainer made from an ice cream container. We needed to let the whey drain out into the pot underneath.

This is whey, a watery liquid that separates from the solids when you make yogurt or cheese.

We wanted to keep it as natural as possible so we used honey to sweeten our yogurt. Some of use liked it. Some however weren't really keen on the taste at all.

Floating and Sinking




During science week roriki and his Room 6 buddy made a buoy. He found he needed to modify the length of his straw so that it didn't tip over and sink.





This reading group presented a Readers Theatre during library time. They were focusing on using dramatic voice and action to enhance their story.

Butter Butters Better

Room 19's food science. This week we learnt what fat is. Butter is a saturated fat. We also investigated how the digestive system works to break down food and absorb fats, carbohydrates and protein. We made butter from cream and a few pinches of salt. Most students were quite surprised at how the cream separated into buttermilk and a solid mass which we know as butter.

Estimation and Measurement

Our first job was to estimate how far the paper plane would fly. Some of our estimations proved to be very close.

As a group we decided whether we would measure to the front of the plane or to the back. Measurements had to be as accurate as possible.

Our job was to measure in metres and centimetres.

Working with others allows us to check our thinking and share knowledge.
Some of the planes flew more than 10 metres.

So my question is... Are we measuring in Metres or Feet?

Science - Ice cream making

Hi Readers. Today we had a real shake up! We made ice cream!
 Besides the obvious that... KIDS LOVE ICE CREAM it was a great way to learn some scientific information.  We were learning that salt causes the ice to melt but it also lowers the temperature at which it melts. This made it ideal for helping our ingredients of milk, sugar and vanilla reach freezing point

Response to Reading

This week a number of students used their creativity in response to a book they had read. This is Take 2 of Marshall's learning. The book he read was called Pigs Might Fly. It is a really popular book in our library corner. It about the Nasty Wolf trying to sabotage The Pigs plane in a race. They turn on their rocket booster and you can see what happens next. The Pigs win and are awarded all the pies they can eat. The Wolf is not happy at all!

Buddy Science Learning

Today Room 19 students worked with our buddies from Room 6 on Science. Our shared  topic is Floating and Sinking.

We discussed our ideas together, shared them with the class and then watched a video about how a submarine floats and sinks
We can't wait until tomorrow when we can make a model to see the science in action.

My mum insisted that I build you a bigger and better house made out of brick. I could also add a wrought iron grill so no annoying wolves climb down your chimney.


Pig Three please forgive me for  jumping down your chimney and making a mess of ash and soot in your wonderful house.
I could help vacuum your house for the next 2 weeks!!!


I regret  trying to eat you too. I will cook anything you want for dinner for one whole month (except when i'm sick :>) I will also bake your favourite cakes  for dessert

I am sorry about trying to eat you. It was a horrible idea. I don't even know if pigs taste good.
I am sorry about blowing down two of your houses with my powerful breath.
The timber and sticks  will be in the container I sent you  I even cut down the wood with the brand new axe I received for my birthday.
I hope I did n’t wreck your chimney when I tried to climb down and capture you.
I hope you are okay I am sending most of the materials to replace what I broke, in a container so that you can rebuild the houses that I destroyed.
My mum says that I will have to help you rebuild the houses and don't worry my mum will  be ‘keeping an eye’ on me.
I will be taking a Hunger Management class as well. My mum says she is really disappointed in me and I can't have my special juicy steak in the weekend.
I will never ever ever come after you again like that. I promise and I truly mean it .

2015 is the year of light, so make a rainbow spinner!

What You Need:

  • Paper plate
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Felts, crayons, or paint (purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red)
  • String 

What You Do:

  1. Divide the plate into six equal sections using the pencil and ruler. 
  2. Colour each section of the plate a different colour of the rainbow. Make sure there is no white showing!
  3. Punch two small holes in the centre of the plate, about 1 cm apart. Thread the string through the holes.
  4. Hold one end of the string in each hand so that the colour disk is in the middle. Wind up your disk by turning while you hold the string. When the string is wound up tight pull both hands away from each other so that your coloured disk spins quickly.
  5. When observing the plate, the colour will begin to blur together and eventually appear to disappear or turn white!
  6. You can try this activity a second time, dividing the plate in half, and using only two primary colours on your disk. Will the colours disappear again? Find out!

What's Going On?

When you've got the plate spinning, your eye can't separate each colour and identify it. In the whirl, all your eyes can tell you is that they see white! If your child is interested in learning more about "optics", or the study of how we perceive light and colour, encourage your child to do some library investigation to find out about colour and light!

Some of us managed to get our size quite uniformed.

These were the most awesome Anzac cookies. Golden brown and CRUNCHY!
