The end is near, let's keep it up!!! Remember to always have Manaakitanga, Manaawanuitanga and Kaitiakitanga!!!

It's the end of week 7, not long to go now learners. To my learners, the last few weeks are like a 800 metre race. Don't stop running and pace yourself until you cross the finish line (The final bell on the last day of term).

Here are just two of the students from Ruma 18 that are doing that!

On your marks, get set................

On Tuesday, Kauri and Puriri students participated in the Owairaka School Athletics Competition. Our warm up was a very enjoyable stroll to Lovelock Track. Then once at the venue, boys and girls were separated into year groups. The girls were first on the track events and boys on the field events. Then half way through our day, the boys had their turn on the track and the girls on the field events. It was really hard to take photos, as all of the teachers were super busy running the events. It was a GREAT day and despite being very tired...................................... we all managed to walk back to school.

A very big THANK YOU to Mrs Mudgway for organising this event for us and to our whanau who helped us on the day.
Everything is always better with whanau involved!!!

Congratulations to.......

Congratulations to Sammy for receiving a Manaakitanga Merit Award on Friday. He constantly demonstrates great respect for his peers as he is always willing to help. Sammy is refining his ability to be a Tuakana in all areas of learning, ensuring that he is 'showing' a teina how to do something rather than 'doing' it for them.

Welcome back to Term 4- Let's learn how to play Cricket!

This term, we are very fortunate to have a coach from Auckland Cricket for 4 sessions.
Session 1 was super fun. We learnt how to hold a bat and played non-stop cricket. No pictures tho, because I (Miss Mills) was busy operating the bowling machine. Guess what I want for Christmas!!!

Session 2- we learnt how to throw and bowl. To do both properly is very challenging.  We practised our technique when having a competition. Each team scored a point every time they hit the wicket.

I look forward to our last 2 sessions next week.

Maori legends expressed in the form of dance

On Tuesday, Room 18 was very fortunate to have a dance session with Megan. Through our dance we were telling the story of Papatuanuku and Ranginui. How at first they were bonded together, and how their tamariki wanted to seperate them.

Here is a video of our dance and how we interpreted the story through movement.

Dawn Raid by Pauline (Vaeluaga) Smith

During Term 3, Room 18 and the whole Kauri Team have been reading a novel called Dawn Raid. If you haven't read it, then we highly recommend that you do. From this novel, we have learnt so much about the history of New Zealand and the Dawn Raids that occurred in the 1970's.

As a way to celebrate our learning, we were very fortunate to have a special assembly. Our guest speaker was Tigilau Ness who was a character in the book and a member of the Polynesian Panthers.

Ka mau te wehi! Celebrating awesomeness!

During our whole school assembly today, several students from Ruma tekau ma waru received certificates and one student won a prize.

Both Fatima and Rekshan received certificates for their effort in the Kauri Team Speech Finals. Rekshan also received our class merit award for being a great tuakana during our filmmaking process.

Herbie was able to choose a prize today because he was chosen from the Kauri Team Values vouchers. Super proud to have Kaitiaki like Herbie in my class.

Then there is the Rugby boys. Great role-models both on and off the sports field.

I would like to share this whakatauki, because I believe that success stems from a belief that you can achieve something. These young learners are proof of this and they should be very proud of their achievements.

'Mauira te pono' - Believe in yourself.

Watch out world Miss Mills has 25 body guards!!!

This weeks Taekwondo session including punching and blocking as well as celebrating being a LOSER. That's right, I said it "We are LOSERS and proud of it". Our instructor shared with us his personal experiences of winning and losing when competing in Taekwondo competitions. We totally took on board his message that, while we will win sometimes, most times we will lose and that's ok.

One thing I know for sure is that when it comes to giving everything 100%, Room 18 students and Miss Mills are WINNERS!

Hiwi the Kiwi

This week we had a visit from the FANTASTIC Mr and Mrs Minstrel. They helped us to understand how we can;
  • Be safe while fishing on a boat- ALWAYS WEAR A LIFE JACKET!!!
  • The importance of measuring our fish to ensure that they are the LEGAL size. Fish that are too small or to big should be returned to our ocean so that they can breed (sustainability).
  • Always use a wet towel when handling fish. This helps to protect their scales. Consider fish scales to be like our sun block.
  • The dangers of plastic and the negative effects it has on our birds and sea life.
We all learnt a lot from this show. Thanks so much to Mr & Mrs Minstrel for the information and entertainment.

We LOVE making MISTAKES!!!!!

Throughout this term, we have been learning about having a 'Growth mindset'. We have been watching a lot of videos about the 'Power of YET'. Soooooooo much to learn. Our brains have done heaps of EXERCISE this term and we will continue to engage in BRAIN workout sessions daily.

In Room 6, we CELEBRATE making MISTAKES. As a teacher, I have had to practice CELEBRATING my MISTAKES with my class. I am very pleased that I have a very supportive class, who have helped me out when I have needed support.

Please enjoy looking at our padlet about MISTAKES.

If you have a POSITIVE BRAIN/MISTAKE message that you would like to share then please include it in a comment.

A truly HAIR RAISING FUNDRAISER!!!!!

What a CRAZY but EXCELLENT day!!!

The reason for this very special day was to support the Shave for Cure fundraising event. Students and staff kindly donated a gold coin/s, raising over $600.

Four very special teachers went the extra mile today and shaved their hair in order to  raise more money for this very worthy cause. While we are all very proud of all of the staff that shaved their heads today, we are especially proud of Mrs Mudgway.
