Te wera hoki- Hot stuff

Today for Pūtaiao we learnt about ENERGY.

Did you know that;

  • Energy is the ability to do work
  • energy is in everything
  • we use energy for everything that we do
  • There are many forms of energy
  • There are two main types of energy
  • Kinetic - energy that is in motion
  • Potential - stored energy.
One activity was to match ngā kāri (cards). One set of kāri named the different type of energy, the other had ngā pikitia (pictures) of images with the form of energy.

We came together, and confirmed our thinking. One was tricky, chemical energy - pākā (burger).

We then had to decide what type of energy they each were.
K = Kinetic - energy that is in motion
P = Potential - stored energy.

We now have a very good understanding of energy and the many different forms it comes in.

Taonga tākaro- Toys

 Today Pūriri tīma visited MOTAT- Museum Of Transport And Technology. It was an amazing day and we learnt a lot about toys from the past. It was fun to interact with some of the toys from the past. Some of them were nearly 100 years old, so we could only look at those.

We learnt that in the past, rich people could have porcelain dolls made in their likeness and even have that persons hair on the doll.

Toys like Sunny Jim were made out of material and you couldn't buy them. You had to buy Forge Flakes- breakfast cereal and cut out the tokens, and post them to the company to get your toy.

Did you know that the original Mr Potato head, was really just sharp ended pieces of arms and legs etc. You had to stick them into a real potato to make your Mr Potato head. Children kept sticking themselves with the sharp pieces, so now they make him out of plastic.

It was very interesting for our whānau that helped us today. Some of the toys brought back fond memories of their childhoods. Games such as Knuckle bones and Elastics, were just a couple of  my favourites.

What are or were some of your favourite toys? Please write a comment about this, tell us as much information about the toy and how you played with it.

A very big THANK YOU to our whānau for helping us today and to Maria for organising this awesome educational experience!
